Job Description
**This is a 6 month Limited Term Role.**
The American Sign Language Specialist supports the review of educational content which has been translated into American Sign Language (ASL). This individual ensures accuracy, clarity, consistency, and strict adherence to ASL linguistic principles and established guidelines.
The ideal candidate possesses native or near-native fluency in ASL and a strong understanding of ASL grammar, syntax, and cultural nuances. This role is crucial for maintaining the high quality and integrity of all ASL educational content.
**Major Responsibilities**
ASL Content Review:
+ Thoroughly review ASL videos for linguistic accuracy, including proper sign production, facial expressions, body language, and non-manual markers
+ Verify the accuracy of translations or interpretations between ASL and spoken English
+ Assess the clarity and comprehensibility of the ASL presentation
+ Ensure consistency in signing styles and terminology across a series of videos or within a project
Quality Assurance:
+ Identify and document any errors, inconsistencies, or areas for improvement in the ASL content
+ Provide constructive feedback to ASL talent, content creators, and production teams
+ Collaborate with production teams to implement necessary revisions and corrections
+ Ensure all videos meet established quality standards and project specifications
Technical Review:
+ Confirm synchronization between ASL and any accompanying text (e.g. captions)
+ Verify video quality, lighting, and framing to ensure optimal visibility of signs
Documentation & Reporting:
+ Maintain detailed records of reviews, feedback, and completed revisions
+ Generate reports on quality metrics and common issues identified
Collaboration:
+ Work closely with accessibility team, content creators, video editors, and ASL talent
+ Participate in team meetings and discussions around ASL video production
**Education**
Master's degree in Deaf Education, Family Studies or related field specializing in working with deaf and hard of hearing individuals, and their families from and accredited college or university OR a Bachelor's degree in Deaf Studies plus five years of teaching experience in education of the deaf or hard of hearing related field specializing in working with deaf and hard of hearing individuals
**Special Knowledge and Skills**
+ Experience communicating in academic sign language and advising on academic translations that are appropriate for high stakes assessments
+ Knowledge of Deaf culture and extensive personal and professional experiences within the Deaf community
+ Fluency in American Sign Language as demonstrated by being a native ASL speaker or a certified ASL translator
+ Functional working knowledge of the Guidelines for Accessible Assessment Project (GAAP) ASL guidelines
+ An understanding of Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.1) is preferred
+ Knowledge of the K-12 market and Pearson products is preferred
Compensation at Pearson is influenced by a wide array of factors including but not limited to skill set, level of experience, and specific location. As required by the California, Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, New York State, New York City, Washington State, and Washington DC laws, the pay range for this position is as follows:
The minimum full-time salary range is between $65,000 - $75,000. This position is not bonus eligible, and information on benefits offered is here.
