The Georgia Department of Law serves the citizens of the State of Georgia by providing legal representation of the highest quality to the agencies, officers and employees of state government and by honorably and vigorously carrying out the constitutional and statutory responsibilities of the Attorney General. The Department of Law is organized into the Executive Office, five legal divisions, four specialty units and an operations division. The position filled through this announcement will serve in the Labor & Employment section of our Government Services & Employment Division.

Job Summary

This is a full-time role as an Assistant Attorney General in the Labor & Employment section at the State of Georgia Office of the Attorney General. The role is based in Atlanta, GA with some work from home flexibility. Attorneys in this section defend state agencies, public colleges and universities and state officers/employees in employment discrimination lawsuits in state and federal court, including at the trial and appeal levels. We also provide general representation to assigned clients including the Georgia Department of Labor, the state’s public retirement systems, the State Personnel Board, and the Veterans Services Board. Travel is occasionally required for this position.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Appear in state and federal courts to try cases and argue motions and appeals;
  • Conduct legal research and keep abreast of recent legal developments in the field;
  • Prepare pleadings, motions and briefs;
  • Prepare discovery requests and responses, including e-discovery;
  • Take and defend depositions;
  • Provide general legal advice and/or representation to clients/agencies;
  • Present training material on relevant subject matter to client agencies;
  • Travel, as required (typically travel is limited)

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school
  • Admission to the Georgia State Bar or eligibility for admission
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Experience in providing legal advice and conducting legal research
  • Strong negotiation skills
  • General litigation experience or labor and employment expertise preferred

Salary Range: $70,000-$119,000, commensurate with experience and bar year.
