Generative AI Company - Chief Scientific Officer (CSO)

Salary: $400-500k + significant equity

Location: New York (hybrid)

We are searching for a Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) to lead our pioneering initiatives.

In this pivotal leadership role, you will define the technical vision and strategic roadmap for our foundation model research across the entire organization, directly shaping the capabilities of our groundbreaking generative AI products.

Your leadership will ignite:

• Strategic Scientific Direction: Develop and articulate a compelling long-term scientific strategy, identifying key research opportunities, emerging trends, and areas for competitive advantage in the generative AI landscape.
• Research Organization Leadership: Recruit, cultivate, and empower a high-performing team of research scientists and engineers, fostering a culture of innovation, rigorous experimentation, and collaborative excellence across all scientific domains.
• Pioneering Research Oversight: Oversee the design and execution of novel research initiatives focused on advancing large language models, multi-modal generation, controllable generation, alignment, and ethical AI, ensuring the company remains at the forefront of the field.
• Product & Business Integration: Collaborate strategically with product, engineering, and business development leaders to translate foundational research breakthroughs into scalable, robust, and impactful generative AI solutions that drive market adoption.
• External Thought Leadership: Act as the primary scientific voice, representing the company at major AI conferences, engaging with the academic community, and influencing the broader generative AI ecosystem.
• Resource & IP Management: Manage significant research budgets, optimize resource allocation, establish best practices for research operations, and contribute significantly to the company's intellectual property and patent strategy.

What we seek in a leader:

• Education: PhD in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, or a closely related field.
• Experience: 10+ years of progressive experience in AI/ML research and development, with at least 5+ years in a senior leadership or executive scientific role (e.g., Head of Research, VP of AI, or CSO).
• Deep Technical Expertise: Demonstrable mastery of large language models, multi-modal models, attention mechanisms, diffusion models, and advanced distributed training techniques.
• Architectural Vision: Proven ability to architect and guide the development of complex, large-scale AI systems.
• Leadership & Impact: A strong track record of building, leading, and scaling successful research organizations, driving innovation, and delivering transformative scientific breakthroughs that have translated into real-world applications or widely recognized publications.
• Published Work: An outstanding publication record in premier AI/ML conferences and journals (e.g., NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, CVPR, ICCV, ACL, EMNLP), and a strong professional network within the generative AI academic and industry communities.

Desirable Skills:

• Extensive experience with MLOps best practices for deploying and managing large-scale AI models in production.
• Proficiency in cloud-native AI infrastructure and distributed computing frameworks at scale.
• Experience in establishing and growing AI ethics and safety research programs.
