About the Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board:
The Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board is the governing body of the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy, located in Plainfield, Indiana. The Board is comprised of 17 members, who have been appointed by the governor. The board sets the requirements and criteria for the basic training of law enforcement officers throughout the State of Indiana, which became mandatory in 1972.
Role Overview:
The Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board (LETB) Curriculum Specialist (CS) is an employee designated to assist the Deputy Director of Standards and Training (DDST) in creating and overseeing applicable policies at academy and agency levels across the state. This oversight role includes law enforcement agencies, law enforcement organizations, offsite Board programs, basic law enforcement, and correctional academies.
The CS serves as a liaison between the training academies and agencies and the DDST and travels to agencies and academies statewide to monitor compliance with established policies and procedures and relevant state and federal laws.
Under the guidance of the DDST, the CS conducts curriculum compliance, develops lesson plans and evaluations, and ensures standardized training for academies and agencies across Indiana. As part of compliance with state statutes and administrative codes, the CS may be called upon to investigate officers’ credentials for suspension or revocation. In addition, the CS during compliance checks of training academies may recommend approval or non-approval of curricula.
The CS is expected to participate in advisory committees to assist with curriculum development, provide advice and assistance to academies and agencies, and ensure minimum requirements of standardized training are accomplished. Such compliance measures will include, but not be limited to, appropriate and safe physical facilities, instructor credentials, training curricula, tests, records compliance, and other evaluative reports. The purpose of such compliance checks is to find best practices; assure current, regular, and uniform training; provide consistent evaluations; and maintain open communication with all training providers.
