Job Description

  • What if your GIS expertise could help ensure safer navigation for millions of mariners?
  • What if your scripts could automate the processing of massive seafloor datasets, uncovering secrets hidden beneath the waves?
  • @Orchard LLC is assembling a team of innovators to support a vital public mission with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). We are seeking a talented GIS Development Scientist to support the Office of Coastal Survey (OCS), the national authority on hydrography.

This is more than a job. It's a chance to apply your skills at the intersection of marine science, data engineering, and software development. You won't just be analyzing data; you'll be building the future of how we collect, process, and understand our nation's coastal waters. If you're ready to make a tangible impact on maritime safety and ocean science, we want you on our team.

    About your role

As a key member of the Hydrographic Surveys Division (HSD) team, you will be a driving force in modernizing the entire lifecycle of hydrographic data. You will be the technical expert who turns complex scientific challenges into elegant, automated solutions.

    • Designing the Future: Architecting and developing automated workflows that streamline how we process massive bathymetric datasets, from ship to shore.
    • Coding for Science: Writing Python scripts, developing models, and building applications to analyze and visualize seafloor data, ensuring its accuracy for official nautical charts.
    • Solving Complex Puzzles: Diving into diverse hydrographic data formats and relational databases to manage, manipulate, and optimize our most critical data assets.
    • Driving Innovation: Identifying new opportunities to apply GIS tools, remote sensing techniques, and software development best practices to solve long-standing challenges in ocean mapping.
    • Collaborating with Experts: Working alongside leading NOAA scientists and engineers in a dynamic environment to share knowledge and develop the next generation of hydrographic standards.

What You Bring to the Team

You are a problem-solver at heart, with a passion for both the science of our oceans and the technology used to explore them. You are meticulous, curious, and driven to create better, more efficient systems.

    Required Experience & Skills:

    • 5+ years of relevant GIS experience, with a strong portfolio in computer mapping and hydrographic applications.
    • A deep understanding of hydrographic science, from acoustic/optic data acquisition systems to bathymetric data formats and the principles of ocean mapping.
    • Expertise in data management, relational databases, and database development.
    • Proven ability to identify opportunities for automation and workflow development.
    • A sharp, critical thinker with meticulous attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
    • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to thrive both independently and in a collaborative team environment.
    • A Bachelor’s degree in GIS, Remote Sensing, Marine Science, Engineering, Oceanography, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).

If you are ready to apply your GIS development skills to a mission that matters, we encourage you to apply and help us chart a safer, more understood marine world.
