Municipal Attorney

Location: Detroit, MI (Hybrid)

Overview:

A highly regarded Detroit-based law firm with over a century of service is seeking a Municipal Attorney to join its dynamic legal team. This role offers the opportunity to provide trusted legal counsel to local government entities, including the mayor, city council, and municipal departments. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in municipal law and a passion for serving the public sector.

Key Responsibilities:

• Provide legal advice and guidance to the mayor, city council, and various city departments.
• Handle matters involving zoning, land use, contracts, employment law, public records, and litigation.
• Represent and defend the city in legal proceedings and administrative hearings.
• Draft, review, and revise city ordinances, resolutions, policies, and contracts.
• Ensure municipal compliance with applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
• Coordinate and oversee the work of outside counsel when retained by the city.
• Attend city council meetings and other governmental functions as legal counsel when required.

Qualifications:

• Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
• Active license to practice law in the State of Michigan (or ability to obtain in a reasonable timeframe).
• 5+ years of experience in municipal or governmental law, either in-house or in a law firm setting.
• Strong understanding of public law areas such as zoning, land use, open meetings, and administrative procedures.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to build strong relationships with public officials, department heads, and community stakeholders.
